Overview
The Bachelor of Arts in Communication (COMC) utilizes Temple's unique setting as an urban institution to prepare students to be tomorrow's communication professionals in the areas of public advocacy; science, health, environmental and risk (SHER); and conflict management. The advocacy area focuses on analyzing and creating strategic messages in socio-political activities and community outreach. The SHER area emphasizes investigating and promoting communication practices about health, the sciences, the environment, and security. The conflict management area focuses on training students to apply communication practices that manage conflict within communities, institutions, and organizations. The Communication major's integrated and dynamic curriculum offers students who wish to help bring about positive change, a gateway to law school, advanced graduate programs, as well as working in the public, private, and non-profit sectors.
Pre-Law Concentration
The optional Pre-Law concentration, offered to students pursuing the BA in Communication, is ideal for highly motivated and highly qualified students who have their sights on completing their law degree after college. This accelerated program provides the opportunity for hardworking students to complete both the Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Juris Doctor (JD) degrees in six years. Students enrolled in the BA in Communication program who want to pursue the accelerated BA+JD program must declare the Pre-Law concentration before or during their first semester as freshmen. This concentration requires that students complete the degree requirements (92 credit hours) for the Communication major within three years and meet rigorous requirements for admission into the JD program. Students who are accepted into the JD professional program in their junior year will complete the remaining 32 credit hours of electives for their BA program by completing Year 1 of the JD program in the Beasley School of Law.
