Overview

The Minor in Chinese, offered by the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures, is designed to provide the language skills and cultural knowledge needed for a number of professions and careers.

This minor requires 6 courses: three Chinese-language courses and three China-focused content courses. Students who place out of CHI 2002, CHI 3001, and/or CHI 3002 may substitute Chinese electives. See the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures for more information on placement and appropriate substitutions.

Residency Requirement: Students who declare a College of Liberal Arts' minor must complete at least half of the program at Temple University. This minor requires a minimum of 18 credits and 6 courses; at least 3 courses must be taken at Temple.

Minimum Grade and GPA Requirements: A minimum grade of C- must be earned in all courses in the minor as well as a minimum GPA of 2.0 in Chinese courses to earn this credential.

Restrictions: Students may not combine this program with the following CLA programs:

  • BA in Chinese
  • Certificate in Chinese

Minors are awarded only at the time of completion of the bachelor's degree and cannot be awarded either as a stand-alone program of study or after completion of the first bachelor's degree.

Requirements

The minor can only be taken as part of an undergraduate degree program. An average of 2.0 in all Chinese courses as well as a minimum grade of C- must be earned in all courses used for the minor. The specific courses required for this minor are listed below.
