Overview
The 14-credit Certificate in French, offered by the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures, introduces undergraduates to the French language and Francophone cultures. As students progress through the various levels of language courses, they'll learn the fundamentals of grammar and vocabulary, and will work to develop sophisticated conversational skills. These skills will allow students to speak, read and write confidently in French for the purposes of their professional or personal pursuits, in the U.S. and abroad.
Students declaring a major or minor in the department are encouraged to study abroad. Temple University has a summer program at the Sorbonne in Paris. Credits earned through the Temple Sorbonne Program may be used toward the French major, minor or certificate and for satisfaction of the GenEd World Society requirement.
Restrictions: Students may not combine this program with the following CLA programs:
- BA in Liberal Studies
- BA in French
- BA in French Studies
- Minor in French
- Minor in French Studies
Certificates are awarded only at the time of completion of the bachelor's degree and cannot be awarded either as a stand-alone program of study or after completion of the first bachelor's degree.

Requirements
Four courses beginning with FREN 1001 through FREN 2001. Students who complete required courses with advanced placement testing must take additional electives in French to complete this certificate program. This certificate must be part of a bachelor's degree program; it is awarded at the time of degree completion.
