Overview
The Minor in French Studies, offered by the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures, is tailored to students who want to build their French language skills through the intermediate level and deepen their knowledge of French and Francophone cultures as they relate to a different area of study, including but not limited to, cinema, literature, history, political science, and art. Interdisciplinary by design, this curriculum gives students the latitude to integrate courses from other departments into their studies, based on their interests. In this way, students can collaborate with others across different degree programs, enjoying a broad scope of ideas and perspectives, while acquiring language skills and following avenues of inquiry in French Studies.
Students declaring a major or minor in the department are encouraged to study abroad. Temple University has a summer program at the Sorbonne in Paris. Credits earned through the Temple Sorbonne Program may be used toward the French major, minor, certificate and for satisfaction of the GenEd World Society requirement.
Residency Requirement: Students who take a minor in any College of Liberal Arts program must complete at least half of the program at Temple University. The minor in French Studies requires 6 courses (19 credits); at least 3 courses must be taken at Temple.
Note: Students who have placed above French 1002 may replace it with a 3-credit upper-level elective course and complete this minor with only 18 credits with approval of their chairperson or faculty advisor.
Minimum Grade and GPA Requirements: A minimum grade of C- must be earned in all courses in the minor as well as a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the discipline to earn this credential.
