Overview

The Certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), offered by the Department of Geography, Environment and Urban Studies, provides training in one of the most powerful, versatile, and in-demand analytical tools in today's job market. GIS combines data and maps to identify, analyze, and visualize spatial patterns to solve complex problems at different scales. Students gain hands on experience with cutting-edge spatial analysis technology and mapping software. Coursework reflects the expertise of our faculty and introduces students to a variety of GIS applications across fields, including urban analytics, health, environment, business, location analysis, geovisualization, and remote sensing.

In a job market where spatial and technical expertise is increasingly valued across industries, the GIS certificate adds a distinctive and highly marketable dimension to your degree, as GIS skills are among the most sought after technical competencies employers are looking for today.

This certificate is open to undergraduate students in all majors at Temple University. Students majoring or minoring in Geography and Urban Studies or Environmental Studies may also complete the GIS certificate.

Residency Requirement: Students must complete at least half of their declared program at Temple University. This certificate requires 12 credits or 4 courses; at least 2 courses must be taken at Temple University.

Minimum Grade and GPA Requirements: A minimum grade of C- must be earned in all courses in the certificate as well as a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the discipline to earn this credential.

Restrictions: Certificates are awarded only at the time of completion of the bachelor's degree and cannot be awarded either as a stand-alone program of study or after completion of the first bachelor's degree.

Requirements

The curriculum consists of two required courses, GUS 3161/ENST 3161 and GUS 3062/ENST 3062, and two electives from the array below. GUS and Environmental Studies majors need only two electives from the approved list below that are unique to the certificate (they cannot double-count with the major requirements).
