Overview

The Minor in German Language and Cultural Studies is offered by the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures. The minor focuses on the acquisition of German language and develops that skill through courses taught completely in German from the intermediate level onward.

Students declaring a major or minor in the department are strongly encouraged to study abroad. Temple University has programs at the universities of Hamburg, Tübingen, and Leipzig in Germany. Courses completed in these programs may be credited toward the German major or minor and in partial satisfaction of the CLA Global Studies requirement.

Residency Requirement: Students who declare a College of Liberal Arts' minor must complete at least half of the program at Temple University. This minor requires 6 courses (19 credits); at least 3 courses must be taken at Temple.

Note: Students who have placement tests waiving German 1002 may replace it with a 3-credit upper-level elective course with approval of their chairperson or faculty advisor and complete this program with 18 credits.

Minimum Grade and GPA Requirements: A minimum grade of C- must be earned in all courses in the minor as well as a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the discipline to earn this credential.

Restrictions: Students may not combine this program with the following CLA programs:

  • BA in German Language and Cultural Studies
  • BA in Interdisciplinary German Studies
  • BA in Liberal Studies
  • Minor in Interdisciplinary German Studies
  • Certificate in German

Minors are awarded only at the time of completion of the bachelor's degree and cannot be awarded either as a stand-alone program of study or after completion of the first bachelor's degree.
